Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence

On November 26th, 2009 the Recreation for Life Foundation, its allied partner, the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), and their many sponsors and supporters will present the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence at the inaugural showcase event.

The Awards will recognize and celebrate individuals or working groups within Alberta’s corporate and business sector for their creativity, innovation, excellence and overall contribution in designing, building, and providing services to support recreation, parks and wellness in our province and its communities.

It is of the utmost importance that we are able to apprise the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association stakeholders about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence. We expect that they will be very interested in this awards program and may, in fact, be a major source of award nominations. We are hopeful that you will be able to assist us with the dissemination of information about our awards program and the showcase event itself.

Specifically, we are requesting that the ARPA membership, through its outreach communication channels, promote to their colleagues and affiliates the Recreation for Life Foundation’s Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence by:

  • informing your colleagues and affiliates about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence through various communication channels;
  • distributing sponsorship opportunities in support of this event;
  • passing on further electronic communiqués provided by the Foundation; and
  • posting a link to the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence on your website to enable your associates and affiliated organizations to learn more about the awards program nomination and registration process.

We are expecting to launch this exciting awards program in June in hopes that the nomination deadline of August 28th will render multiple nominations in all of the six award categories.

Should you have any questions about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence program please contact the Recreation for Life Foundation office. Please visit the following links to view the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence brochure, nominations form, and sponsorship opportunities. All of these materials may also be viewed on the Awards website at www.Awards.RecreationforLife.org.

We are currently seeking sponsorship support and would greatly appreciate any support to any one of the many sponsorship opportunities.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and expedient action to this request as we move forward in disseminating the necessary information.

Sincerely,

Randall Conrad,

Active, Creative, Engaged Communities (ACE Communities) Application Notice

ARPA’s Active, Creative, Engaged Communities (ACE Communities) recently sent out an application notice to Alberta communities who may be interested in learning about potential support that is available to improve the quality of life in rural Alberta by developing community leadership and community development. This notice is a reminder of the upcoming deadline of MAY 29TH and provides a link to the application.

The Active, Creative, Engaged Communities (ACE) initiative, spearheaded by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), is designed to enhance quality of life in rural Alberta by strengthening community leadership, collaboration, and innovation through recreation, parks, arts, culture, and heritage. Rural communities of all sizes are considered including cities, villages, hamlets, or communities. Unfortunately, Calgary and Edmonton are not eligible for partnering.

The ACE Communities initiative is made possible as the result of generous support by Rural Alberta’s Development Fund (RADF), Encana, and Canwest.

Two kinds of support, influenced by a community’s identified needs, will be provided over a two year period: 1) Seed Funding of $10,000 and 2) In-kind support estimated at $45,000 in value. Over a two year period, leaders from each partner community will participate in a variety of activities that include: teleconferences, retreats, training opportunities, and, with the support of a community development coach, local initiatives that will engage other community members in your community.

The support is provided to strengthen and facilitate the growth of local community leaders who in turn will involve more citizens in making their community a better place to live, work and play. The intent is to build on your community’s existing expertise and resources particularly in the areas of collaboration and innovation.

Currently, ACE Communities is supporting 20 partner communities and is now seeking an additional 10. The application dead-line is MAY 29th, 2009 and notification of a conditional acceptance will take place on June 16th, 2009.

For more information and the actual application click this link:

Please be patient as it may take a minute or so to load. Many thanks.

What will Edmonton look like in 2017 if we host a Worlds’ Fair?

Eight years may seem a long way off but when it comes to committing billions of dollars to projects and infrastructure it is not. Planning, putting out for proposals, reviewing and then actually building the myriad of buildings, roads and transportation links takes time. Rome was not built in a day and making Edmonton “World Expo” ready cannot happen overnight either.

So let us time travel into Edmonton 2017 with the start of Edmonton WF 2017 starting on May 1. What does Edmonton look like?

Landing at the newly opened terminal at the Edmonton International Airport was easy and fast with so many choices of flights and airlines to pick from, the hardest thing was not being blinded by how sparkling and fresh everything was in the terminal. Once you picked up your luggage from the baggage carousel you decided to take the LRT right to the Worlds’ Fair site and even though the official kick off is a couple of days away the WF station is open and fully functional. You marvel how rapid Edmonton’s Light Rail Transit is—it seems you arrived at the station in mere moments—with no connections required. Still you resolve to check out the Anthony Henday Freeway, which you have heard is an engineering and driving wonder on your return trip to that fantastic Edmonton International Airport.

Deciding to hold off exploring the site until the official opening ceremonies, you are nonetheless awestruck by what you see before you at the WF station and eagerly look forward to seeing all the charms the site so blatantly promises. You are staying downtown so you hop back on the LRT and head towards your hotel but not before you noticed signs for the WEM station and decide that a trip to this “indoor wonder” will be in the offing in the next couple of days.

You arrive at your hotel in no time and are astonished to see so many professional and courteous staff eager to make your stay as effortless and enjoyable in the “Edmonton way”. Check-in is quick. Dropping your bags off in the well-appointed hotel room before heading out to eat you stop off at the concierge for recommendations. The choices are a myriad of ethnic or local cuisine…but deciding that a local landmark will be your first Edmonton dining experience you head off to the historic Fairmont Hotel MacDonald.

On your short walk to the “Mac” (as it is affectionately referred to by Edmontonians) you are struck by how clean and “dressed up” downtown Edmonton looks. Crossing Jasper Avenue (which you have been told is the main street for Edmonton); you note all the welcoming banners and the displays that line the surrounding streets and buildings. This city really knows how to throw an event you think. Jasper Avenue is alive with people and there is something happening everywhere you pass.

You know this is going to be a fantastic three months for you, Canada and Alberta but mostly for the Greater Edmonton Area. You are glad Edmonton had the foresight to bid for (and subsequently win!) such an event and you are proud of the growth and fortitude this scrappy city has shown, now about that meal…

Canadian Federal Sport & Recreation Infrastructure Funding

The 2009 Federal Budget outlines provisions for addressing the infrastructure deficit in sport and recreation through the new Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Fund.

The RInC Fund provides $500 million over two years to support construction of new community recreational facilities and upgrades to existing facilities. The initiative will support up to 50 per cent of the total cost. To be eligible, projects must be “shovel ready.” Plans should be in place soon for evaluation, and should be able to be initiated within ten months.

For more information on this initiative and how funds will be administered in Alberta, please visit the Western Economic Diversification website at www.wd.gc.ca/eng/home.asp.
